HALLMARKING
In the world of fine jewellery, true value isn’t just seen— it’s verified. A hallmark is a discreet yet powerful seal of approval; a series of stamped symbols that serves as a centuries-old guarantee and an immutable record of a piece's origin, purity, and integrity.
What is a hallmark?
Hallmarking is one of the oldest forms of consumer protection in the UK, with a history stretching back to the 1300s. It serves as a legal seal of quality, signifying that a piece has been independently tested—or assayed—to verify it matches its description and conforms to all legal standards of purity.
Precious metals are inherently soft, therefore they are rarely used in their purest form. Instead, they are mixed with other metals to create a durable alloy suitable for daily wear. Since it is impossible to determine the exact purity of an alloy by sight or touch alone, the Assay Office acts as an essential third party to verify exactly how much pure gold, silver, platinum, or palladium is present in your jewellery.
Any precious metal item sold in the UK must be hallmarked if it exceeds a specific weight (7.78g for Silver). At MV Jewellery, every piece exceeding an alloys limit is verified and stamped by the Birmingham Assay Office, providing you with an independent guarantee of authenticity.
